The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn opens up with a disclaimer for the lector which includes the statement That brave out was made by Mr. Mark coupling, and he told the truth, mainly. There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth. ( coupling pg. 1) With these words it becomes classic from the very beginning lying is a major field of operation in the book. Huckleberry Finn is a liar throughout the whole fable but unlike other characters, his lies seem justified and morally good to the ref because they are meant to protect himself and Jim and are non, as is the case with other characters who use lies for self interest and benefit. Twain uses three types of lies in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn which include vicious and self-serving lies, blameless lies, and noble lies, to shed light on the hypocrisy runaway in American society. An example of lying is presented right at the beginning, after Tom and Huck play a fraud on Jim who lies t o all the other slaves about how his hat got taken of his head and put on a tree sleeve above him while sleeping. He describes an encounter with some manikin of spirits visiting him which gives him notoriety status among the slaves. When questioned by skeptics, Jim would still when reply with the question Hm! What you know bout witches?

(6) This establishes itself as a self-serving lie, similar to Jims supposed mystical precedent of the hairball which he claims can predict the future in addition it only works when Jim gets paid first. Twain is showing the reader that even those who are at the bottom of the social wee of the United States have ! been affected by the lies or in this case pranks that superiors have placed over him.The biggest and most calumnious lie Huck tells is when he fakes his own murder in his fathers shack. He goes through a great deal of inconvenience to make sure that people believe that he is dead, and it is not until the end of the novel that it becomes known to the people of his home town that he is actually alive.
